All Addictions Anonymous: A Story of Resilience, Transformation, and The Legacy of Mucking
In 2003, a visionary named Scottie G. identified a deep-rooted need and laid the foundation for All Addictions Anonymous (AAA). While AAA was relatively smaller compared to other fellowships, its spirit was boundless, deeply rooted in the time-honored principles of the 12 steps.
Early on, Scottie encountered the Muckers' approach, a method within the 12-step community renowned for its intense engagement with the Big Book. The method, often termed as "mucking," involved a meticulous and immersive annotation process of the book's foundational teachings. Recognizing the power of this engagement but also understanding the reservations some had about "mucking up" the book, Scottie ingeniously transformed the process. Drawing inspiration from the Muckers, he introduced a 6-color highlighting system. This method maintained the depth of engagement but without altering the sanctity of the Big Book's pages.
AAA began humbly, with limited volunteers, but among them was a beacon named Samu. Her passion for service resonated deeply with Scottie's own dedication, and together, they began weaving the refined legacy of "mucking" into the fabric of AAA's teachings.
Then, the world was plunged into the whirlwind of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The essence of AAA was put to a significant test amidst global fear and uncertainty. During this challenging period, AAA faced the heartbreaking loss of Sarah Clarke. Scottie recalled, "On May 28th, the day Sarah passed away, AAA pivoted. The world was in lockdown, with many unable to attend meetings. Many who approached us sought not the traditional 12-step recovery but something different. We realized we had to break some traditions to be of utmost service." With the teachings of the Muckers and the innovative highlighting system in mind, AAA began serving those seeking spiritual solace during these uncertain times.
AAA's metamorphosis was also fueled by Scottie’s spiritual evolution. While the teachings of the Muckers and the AA remained significant to him, his spiritual journey expanded, benefiting not only himself but those who came to AAA for guidance.
A unique feature of AAA's approach was the “funnel” system. Designed to emphasize genuine human connections, it championed inclusivity and accessibility.
Scottie's personal journey spanned over two decades, battling addictions to substances like crack and alcohol. This journey, fortified by the teachings of the Muckers and his innovative highlighting method, became his therapy, superseding the traditional meetings.
Samu, too, had her battles. She faced cognitive memory issues, social anxiety, PTSD, and more. Yet, she found solace and purpose in service, inspired by the Big Book's teachings.
United in their dedication, Scottie and Samu's combined passion established AAA's unique spiritual methodology. They emphasized well-being and service, echoing the Muckers' belief that genuine human connections and spiritual growth were the essence of life.
